| SIPS (Scientific Image Processing System) is a software package, focused on two areas: First, astronomical observation control and, second, scientific image processing. Together with the SIPS itself, we are now developing a tutorial video series designed to decrease the barrier of entry. |
|
SIPS started many years ago as a simple tool to download and visualize images from the prototype CCD cameras. Since then, SIPS has evolved significantly. Today, we believe it truly earns the ‘Scientific’ part of its name. Still, the barrier of entry often grows with functionality and, therefore, we are introducing a new tutorial video series. New videos are being periodically added to the YouTube playlist Part VII. Image calibrationPart VII. focuses on image calibration using Dark Frames and Flat Fields. First, we create master Dark Frames for both Flat Fields and raw data, then create master Flat Fields, and finally use those to calibrate the whole batch of photometric data. In the end, we use the Blink tool to probe the data from the whole night and, just for demonstration, stack the images. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/rn_H1IYCquw Part VI. Image AcquisitionWith the basic concepts covered, part VI. starts with more practical aspects – how to connect a camera and take images. It also highlights some unique features of SIPS, for example, the ability to handle multiple simultaneously connected cameras. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/TNJzE5MH5f0 Part V. Image ListsFollowing the introduction of Images, the fifth video introduces Image Lists – the key part of any batch operations in SIPS. You can find the video here:https://youtu.be/vXtt_n1VmR0 Part IV. ImagesImages are arguably a very vital part of any astronomical software. Part IV. of this tutorial demonstrates how images work in SIPS and touches the basic transformations. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/70cYiuhfVyQ Part III. User InterfaceSIPS User Interface is inspired by the modern ribbon design but goes a bit further and allows for a significant amount of customizability. The third video explains details of how this customization works. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/hBWWzUYulPk Part II. InstallationThe second part provides the mandatory notes on installation. Still the distinction between 32- and 64-bit versions is quite important for software working with drivers so we will explain in. You can find the video here: https://youtu.be/YFpcy4_nzI4 Part I. IntroductionThe first video provides a brief overview and serves only as a teaser for the videos to come. The next in line are installation including ini files and a general overview of the user GUI.
