Discovery of an O III envelope extending around NGC 2818A
We’re always thrilled when our cameras contribute to new discoveries. Recently, Mark McComiskey used our C5-150M camera to uncover an O III envelope surrounding the planetary nebula NGC 2818A. His results were published in Research Notes of the AAS (American Astronomical Society). Congratulations to Mark!

Only a limited number of planetary nebulae are directly associated with star clusters. Such associations provide an opportunity for accurate distance measurements to the nebula, thereby enabling precise estimations of physical dimensions and enhancing our understanding of stellar dynamics. NGC 2818A is one example of a planetary nebula with this connection. Mark’s contribution includes the discovery of a previously unreported O III envelope surrounding the nebula. At a distance of approximately 11,000 light years, its actual size is estimated to be around 23.5 light years. Further details can be found in the original publication.

Mark’s discovery images were produced using a total integration time of 8.5 hours using our C5-150M camera.
